Max Pappe's Life in Pictures

1909. Art Pappe and Violet Major. Max's parents were married on July 28, 1909. Art was born and raised in Kingfisher, Oklahoma. Violet was born just outside Kearney, Nebraska but moved to Kingfisher County near Altona about 1892.

 

 

1917. Max was born in Kingfisher, Oklahoma. These are the "Pappe Buildings" in Kingfisher about the time Max was born. Max's grandfather built these two buildings. The one on the left was originally the Grand Opera and was later renamed.

 

1920. Art Pappe's house on Sheridan Avenue, Kingfisher. This is the house where Art Pappe's family lived in 1920. This photo of the house at 9th and Sheridan was taken in December 2001. It was probably built by Art, who was a carpenter by trade. In that same year Art leased a 240 acre farm east of Kingfisher, adjacent to his father's homestead.

 

1930s. Art Pappes house on 7th Street, Kingfisher. The Pappes moved into this house years later. Max's service record give his address as 120 7th Street, Kingfisher, OK

 

Fall 1932. Twenty Millionth Ford in Kingfisher. Max (age 14) and friend, Scott Oswald, ditched school that day.

 

About 1933. Max at age 15 with sister, Louise Pappe, age 22. Other man could be brother, Charles.

About 1934. Fishing in Minnesota. Left to right: Max Pappe, unknown boy, Art Pappe, unknown man, Richard Pappe Jr., Richard Pappe III. Max spent his summers at the Pappe cabin on a lake in Minnesota.

 

April 1936, Oklahoma City. Max was 18 years old in April 1936.

 

April 1936, Laguna Beach, California. Max traveled West with friends Fritz Lietzke (shown) and Charlie Nunn when he was 19 years old

 

 

About 1938, In his National Guard Uniform. 20 years old. The pin on his cap is from the Oklahoma National Guard, 45th Infantry Division. Round lapel pins have crossed cannons, symbolizing Field Artillery.

 

December 1940, Kingfisher, Oklahoma. National Guard Units preparing to leave for active duty in the regular Army. Photo is from "The Pioneers of Kingfisher County", page 344, published in 1976.

 

August 1941, Camp Barkley, Texas. Field Artillery School.

 

1943. Officers Candidate School (OCS) Graduation. Mildred pinned on his Lieutenant's bars.

 

November 1943. Max and Mildred's wedding. Best man is Fritz Lietzke, bridesmaid is Rita Wittrock.

 

Summer 1944. Awaiting the birth of their first child.

 

Fall 1944. Son Donald is born at Fort Sill Army hospital. The biggest baby on record there.

 

Summer 1945. With sister, Louise Altizer and her son Chucky.

 

Fall 1945. Active duty in the Phillipine Islands. With comrades and local children.

 

 

Spring 1946. Daughter Marilyn is born in El Reno, Oklahoma

 

Summer 1946. With Donald and Marilyn in Oklahoma.

 

Spring 1947. Daughter Elaine is born in Oklahoma City

 

Fall 1947. Picking oranges in California. Photo taken at construction site in Downey with sister, Louise, Mrs. Reynolds, and parents, Art and Violet Pappe.

 

Winter 1947, Bellflower, California. Pappe children in California during construction of new house in Downey, California.

 

 

1948, Downey, California. The family moves into the house that Max built.

 

1950. Max and Scott Oswald build a boat in Max's garage. 14 feet long and painted white and red.

 

1952 Tuna Fishing. Max and Scott Oswald go deep sea fishing in the little 14' boat.

 

Winter 1957, Los Angels. An evening out at Larry Potter's Supper Club in Los Angeles.

 

October 1958. Max and Mildred always loved a party! This one was next door at the Scheafer's house.

 

About 1962. Mildred's handwriting on back says: "A beautiful picture!"

 

 

 

 

 

 

1966 Hawaii Vacation. Toured Honolulu, Kawai, Maui with friends Lee and Eleanor Siebels.

 

 

1966. First grandchild.

 

1968 Mexico Vacation. Mexico City, Acapulco, Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan with friends Dutch and Helen Ammerman and Lee and Eleanor Siebels.

 

 

 

1971."Spacious and Gracious. Just listed. A world of your own in this beautiful shake roof, 3 bedroom & den home. It is immaculate inside & out, has many fine features including a 20x34 ft. covered patio with facilities for outdoor entertaining. You must see to believe."

The house that Max built in Downey is sold. After living there for 22 years, Max and Mildred retire to Cathedral City.

 

1971. Cathedral City. The house where Max and Mildred lived in retirement.

 

1971. Twin Grandchildren, Robbie and Kimberly

 

 

1978. Granddaughter Angela

 

 

1979. Ham Operator. Max got his amateur radio license in 1979. He operated with the call sign KA6EKV.

 

1984. Granddaughter Jessica.

 

Dancing at the Elks Club in Cathedral City. Max was a 30-year member. They went dancing nearly every Friday night.

 

About 1990. Wheel of fortune. Max loved to watch "Wheel of Fortune" on TV. He even had his picture taken with Vanna White.

 

1996. Twin great granddaughters. Photo taken on their first birthday in 1997.

 

1998 and 2000. First great grandson and one more great granddaughter born.

 

2000. Yet another great granddaughter born.
