1883 Albert Pappe Christening

Richard and Louise Pappe's son, Albert Pappe was baptized in Newton, Kansas on August 26th, 1883. Witnessing the baptism were Richard's brother, Albert Pappe, a relative of Louise, Louis Kornrumpf, and an unknown person named Andreas Martin. It is not known whether Louis Kornrumpf was Louise's brother, Gerhardt Louis Kornrumpf, or perhaps an uncle or cousin. Albert's name is derived from the first names of each of the witnesses, as was the custom in some parts of Germany.

A translation of his Baptism certificate and the original German text follows:

Albert Andreas Louis son of Richard Pappe and his wife Louise nee Kornrumpf, born the July 27th in the town of Newton, Harvey County, Kansas, on August 26th, 1883 in the home of the parents

was baptized in the name of God.

Godparents were:
Andreas Martin
Louis Kornrumpf
Albert Pappe

hereby certified by
A. S. Teutschel, Ph.D., Pastor

Albert Andreas Louis Sohn der Richard Pappe und dessen Ehefrau Louise nee Kornrumpf geboren der 27ten Juli in der Stadt Newton, Harvey Co. Kas. ist am 26ten Aug 1883 in der Wohnung der Eltern.

im Namen des Dreieinigen Gottes getauft worden
.

Taufzeugen waren
Andreas Martin
Louis Kornrumpf
Albert Pappe

welches hierdurch des bescheiniget wird
A. S. Teutschel, Ph.D Pastor

Notes:

1) Louis Kornrumpf is possibly Louise's older brother, Gerhardt Louis Kornrumpf, born June 03, 1857 in Gross Lengden, Germany. A Louis Kornrumpf lived in Kansas City, KS and can be found in the 1890 city directory (Koenrumpf) and the 1885 state census (Kornrunts).

2) The 1885 Kansas state census shows an A.S. Teruschel living in Wichita, KS, which is about 20 miles due south of Newton, KS. He was born in Germany. No occupation is listed.

3) The 1885 Kansas state census shows an A. Martin living in Augusta, Butler Co., KS, which is about 30 miles SE of Newton, KS. His occupation is listed as "miller" so it's possible this is the same Andreas Martin and that Richard Pappe, a baker, purchased baking ingredients from him.

1903 - 1905 Affidavits about John Hermann Pappe's death in Alaska

The following affidavits describe the death of John Pappe, one of Richard and Albert Pappe's brothers, who died in Alaska in 1903. John Pappe was named "Johann Hermann Richard Pappe" when he was christened in Stotternheim, Germany on May 16, 1852. He left Germany before 1872 and was known as "Hermann Pappe" here for many years. Later on he changed to the name "John Pappe". Newspaper accounts of his death refer to him as "John H. Pappe." Records of John Pappe's life are few, but some records have been found in Tazewell, IL and Newton, KS -- the same towns where Richard and Albert Pappe lived in the 1870s and 1880s.

The following is a transcription of the signed affidavits.

I, Daniel Headman, being first duly sworn, on oath, depose and state: That I am acquainted with John Pappe, that I was present at the time of his death.

The circumstances of his death are:

That the said John Pappe and myself started March 5th, 1903 from a small steam boat in which said Pappe is interested, where it is in winter quarters on Baker River, about two miles above Dekyme our destination being our camp, at the mouth of Glacier, a distance of about thirty five miles by the Baker trail which we had taken, there were no houses or camps between the two points. The snow was very deep and we were pulling a sled for about fifteen miles of the distance. At about seven o'clock in the evening we left the sled and started on traveling until about three o'clock in the morning when he Pappe became so exhausted he died. He traveled the last half mile on his hands and knees.

I remained with him until he died, I then continued on my way to the camp which was still about five miles distance and arrived there at about half past five o'clock in the morning. It was between twenty and twenty five degrees below zero during the time we were out and at the time of his death.
