.These photos are believed to be of Karl Freidrich Ludwig Pappe. According to letters from his brother Albert to brother Richard, and other records, Karl lived in Leipzig and had a son named Arthur who was born about 1885. The large framed photo at the left, probably taken about 1890, has the handwriting on the back that appears to say "Carl" and "1857 " .

Conscription was mandatory at age 18 for all men in Germany in the 1800s. The photo of Karl Pappe as a young soldier was likely taken about 1875.
