An
example of an "economical" record of 22 November 1784.
The
record says, "Baptized in Bippen is a son of Arnoldi Kösters
and
Catharina Elisabetha Hallwaßen - Börstel." The
child is not
named
in this record.
These
Kösters from the Berge area are possible early Köster
ancestors. They were located in the records when we visited
the Berge area and also from the research by Jürgen Hausfeld,
from Münster and Carol Saint-Clair, from Osnabrück , Germany.
All the records were found in the Kirchenbüch of St. Servatius
Church in Berge.

“The Berge
Kirchenbüch begins in 1690. Between 1732 and 1787 there are
no trustworthy registers. In addition the church book entries
are very incomplete. For example, there is a year where only
one child is baptized, but 30 infants died at ages of less the
six months. Often the data is also very economical. The entry
might only say “getauft on 20 May, Eltern Köster.” Then it is
difficult to find the correct family.”

The
early church record books of Berge appear to have been kept
by priests who did not like doing this work. Many births and
deaths were simply not recorded or only partial information
was recorded. The marriage records are also missing from 1731-1787.
This makes research very difficult and some gaps cannot be filled
with facts. We can only make assumptions about the early generations
and hope further records will be found in the future. We currently
assume the earliest Köster family members found in the records
in Berge are our ancestors, but this remains a theory.
