Walter B Koster (1915-2009)

BREDA

Walter B. Koster, 91, of Breda, a former longtime Carroll County supervisor, died Wednesday night, Nov. 8, 2006, at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll.

Mass of the Christian Burial for Mr. Koster will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Breda with the Revs. James McAlpin and Dale Koster concelebrating. Lector will be Paula Winkel. Gift Bearers will be Sarah Strong, Amy Jo Kollasch, Theresa Koster, and Karen White. Servers will be Jim and John Grabner. Eucharistic ministers will be Ione Koster and Joyce Koster.

Casket bearers will be Patrick Koster, Chris Kollasch, Paul Koster, David Koster, Robert Winkel and Kyle Strong.

Burial will be in St. Bernard Cemetery at Breda.

Visitation starts at 2:30 p.m. and a rosary will be prayed at 3 p.m. Friday at Sharp Funeral Home in Breda. St. Bernard Parish will hold a Christian wake service at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

A son of William and Matilda (Grabner) Koster, he was born Nov. 8, 1915, at Breda and spent his life in the community.

He graduated from St. Bernard High School at Breda in 1932 then farmed with his family.

He and Viola Reising were married Feb. 6, 1939, at St. Bernard Church.

The Kosters farmed west of Breda. In 1951 they purchased the home farm northwest of Breda. Mr. Koster was a grain and livestock farmer and was a salesman for Arbie Feeds for many years.

Mr. Koster served on the Carroll County Board of Supervisors for 19 years, from 1970 to 1988. While there he helped establish Mallard View, the Carroll County Recycling Center and Westco Industries in Denison. He also served on the 5th Judicial District Board.

The Kosters moved into Breda in 1987.

Mr. Koster was presented the Good Neighbor Award by the Carroll Chamber of Commerce in 1995 for his work on the Board of Supervisors, Carroll Area Development Corp. and Region 12 Council of Governments.

He was also a poll worker for Wheatland Township for many years and was a member of the former Carroll County School Board.

He was a member of St. Bernard Parish and enjoyed attending sporting events and making hunting and fishing trips with family and friends.

Survivors include five children: Allen Koster and wife Joyce of Carroll, Mary Kay Koster of Sioux City, James Koster of Breda, John Koster and wife Ione of Breda and Marcia Kollasch and husband Dean of Viroqua, Wis.; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three brothers: Kermit Koster of Lake View, Roger Koster and wife Darlene of Elkader and LeRoy Koster and wife Joanell of Breda; two sisters: Maxine Heinrichs and husband Marvin of Fulda, Minn., and Ruth Heinrichs and husband Cletus of Marshalltown; and three sisters-in-law: Bernice Koster of Fonda, Dolores Koster of Breda and Dorothy Walz of Carroll.

Mr. Koster was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Viola, in 2002; three brothers: William, Doyle and Donald Koster; a sister, Velma Blum; two sisters-in-law: Loretta Koster and Elsie Koster; and a brother-in-law, Bob Blum.

ARCADIA


Elaine E. Bierl, 83, of Arcadia, died Wednesday, March 29, 2006, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll following a long illness.

Mass of the Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 1, at St. John Catholic Church in Arcadia with the Rev. John Thomas presiding. Mrs. Bierl’s brother, the Rev. Dale Koster, and the Rev. Richard Remmes will concelebrate. Lectors will be granddaughters: Rachel Kitt, Jenny Irlmeier and Kerry Bierl. Gift bearers will be granddaughters: Nicole Bierl, Amy Wiederin and Katie Bierl. Servers will be a grandson, Nick Bierl, and Shawn Higgins. Eucharistic minister will be a daughter, Janice Dietzenbach.

Casket bearers will be grandsons: Michael Dietzenbach, Paul Dietzenbach, Wes Bierl, Chad Irlmeier, Matt Bierl, Michael Bierl, Jeff Bierl and Brian Irlmeier.

Burial will be in St. John Cemetery at Arcadia.

A daughter of Clem and Hazel (Van Erdewyk) Koster, she was born Feb. 8, 1923, at Breda, attended St. Bernard School there and spent her younger years in community.

She and Otmar J. Bierl were married Nov. 21, 1944, at St. Bernard Church in Breda. They farmed north of Arcadia until 1984, when they moved into Arcadia. Mrs. Bierl was a homemaker.

She was a member of St. John Parish and Christian Mothers and enjoyed playing cards, quilting for her family, sewing, needlework, crocheting, gardening, flowers and making rosaries.

Survivors include her husband, Otmar, of Arcadia; five children: Janice Dietzenbach and her husband, Donald, of Urbandale, Leon Bierl and his wife, Alyce, of Arcadia, Ron Bierl and his wife, Sharon, of Westside, Nadine Irlmeier and her husband, Dave, of Manning and Dale Bierl and his wife, Joyce, of Arcadia; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five brothers: Floyd Koster and his wife, Terry, of Breda, Edgar Koster of Auburn, the Rev. Dale Koster of Auburn, Urban Koster and his wife, Pat, of Breda and Jerome Koster and his wife, Jean, of Breda; and five sisters: Alma Schroeder and her husband, Ivan, of Elma, Anita Hannasch and her husband, Duane, of Carroll, Norma Jean Ludwig of Vail, Myrna Schmidt and her husband, Van, of Three Forks, Mont., and Alice Thielen of Carroll.

Mrs. Bierl was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Leo Koster, in infancy; two sisters: Pearl Staiert and Helen Bertrand; and a sister, Mary Margaret Koster, in infancy.


Kermit Edward Koster (1919-2006)

LAKE VIEW

Mass of the Christian Burial for Kermit Edward Koster of Lake View will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wall Lake.

Mr. Koster, 87, died Thursday, Nov. 30, at Sioux City.

Burial will be in Wall Lake Cemetery.

Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. and a vigil will be held at 7:30 p.m. today at Farber and Otteman Funeral Home in Lake View.

A son of William and Matilda (Grabner) Koster, he was born Oct. 27, 1919, on his family's farm near Breda. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Breda, and graduated from St. Bernard High School in Breda in 1937.

Mr. Koster served in the Army during World War II and participated in the Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe Campaigns. He received the American Defense Service Ribbon, European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon with Silver Battle Star, four Overseas Service Bars, a Service Stripe and the Good Conduct Medal. He was also an expert marksman in pistol, rifle and machine gun.

He and Elsie Rose Wolterman were married Jan. 27, 1948, St. Bernard Catholic Church.

Mr. Koster was a farmer and livestock producer. He retired and moved to Lake View in 1984. He later moved to Wall Lake.

He pitched for the Breda Eagles, Lakes and several other area baseball teams. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing and carpentry. He was a member of St. Bernard Church and later St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wall Lake. He also belonged to the American Legion in Lake View.

Survivors include eight children: David Koster of Sac City, Janet Koster of Sioux City, Catherine Justice of Marion, Joseph Koster and wife Pat of Lake City, Raymond Koster and wife Lori of Wall Lake, Barbara Legler and husband Joe of Kansas City, Mo., Rose Robeson and husband Tom of Centennial, Colo., and Edward Koster and wife Shelly of Sioux City; 13 grandchildren and their spouses: Beth and Steve Roth, Jeremy Justice, Stacy Koster, Brett Koster, Brock Koster, Eric and Lindsey Koster, Brian Koster, Alex Koster, Melissa Koster, Joshua Legler, Jenny Legler, Andy Robeson and Katie Robeson; four great-grandchildren; two sisters: Ruth Heinrichs and husband Cletus and Maxine Heinrichs and husband Marvin; and two brothers: Roger Koster and wife Darlene and LeRoy Koster and wife Joanell.
