Henry Gerhard was born on 4 June 1876 at Sac County, Iowa. The family called him Hien. Henry was killed instantly when he fell down a flight of steps leading to the Legion Hall in Breda, Iowa. He was buried at St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery, Breda, Carroll County, Iowa.

Henry Nieland appears on the 1930 Federal census of Carroll County, Iowa. Henry Nieland (54) is enumerated as a boarder with the Joseph Steinkamp family on a farm in Kniest Township. He lists his occupation as contractor doing building. Joseph Steinkamp (24) is enumerated on the farm next to his parents in Kniest Township with his wife Josephine (25) and daughter Darlene (1/12). They are renting the farm and have a radio.

Henry died on 26 February 1931 at Breda, Carroll County, Iowa, at age 54. He was buried at St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery, Breda, Carroll County, Iowa.
