Henry Joseph Nieland (1871-1957)

The son of John Gerhard Nieland and Maria Christina Nienhues (John Gerhard, John Henry, John Henry, Johann Daniel Nieland, Berndt Nilandt, Earliest Nieland)

Henry Joseph Nieland was born on 14 April 1871 at Ramsdorf, Westphalia, Germany. He married Agnes Ahrling on 13 February 1900. He was also known as Heinrich Josef Nieland.

He immigrated on 20 June 1892 to the United States. He is recorded in the Ellis Island records as a German immigrant who departed from Antwerp, Belgium. He traveled on the ship Belgenland and arrived at age 20 years. His place of residence is listed as Ramsdorf, Westphalia, Germany.

He appeared in the 1895 census of Carroll County, Iowa. Henry (21) is enumerated on a farm in Wheatland Township as the hired man for Frank Wesling (54). The Wesling family includes Mary (40), Anna (15), Frank (12), Clara (1) and Henry (3). The Wesling couple and Henry list Germany as birthplace and all of the Wesling children were born in Carroll County.

He appeared on the Federal census of 1900 at Carroll County, Iowa. He was enumerated in Wheatland Township with Bernard H. Ahrling (62) and his wife Louise (62), daughters Agnes (23), Gertrude (22) and Francis (17). Although he is listed as son-in-law, Agnes is not listed as his wife.

He appeared on the Federal census of 1910 at Carroll County, Iowa. He was enumerated in Wheatland Township as head of the household (38), with his wife Mary A. (33) and children Anton (8), Leo (5), Lawrence (3) and Anna [Cecilia] (3/12). They have been married 10 years and have 4 of 5 children living. Also in the household are Bernard H. Ahrling (64) and wife Louise P. (68) and sister-in-law Gertie (31). The hired man is Henry Grote (26). Bernard and Louise have been married 38 years and have 3 of 4 children living and are German immigrants arriving in 1870 and 1875.

He appeared on the Federal census of 1920 at Carroll County, Iowa. He was enumerated in Wheatland Township as head of household (42), with his wife Agnes (42) and children Leo (15), Lawrence (13), Celia (10) and Mary (7). Also in the household are Henry Ahrling (72) and Louise (72) and sister-in-law Gertrude (41). Immigration dates are listed as 1868 and 1869 for the Ahrlings and 1892 for Henry Joseph. The year of naturalization is listed as 1897 for Henry Joseph.

(58) was enumerated in Wheatland Township as head of household with his wife Agnes (58) and children Lawrence (23), Cecelia (20) and Mary (17). Also in the household are B. H. Ahrling (83), widowed father-in-law and "Gehard" Nieland (19) a laborer/lodger who was born in Minnesota. Gerhard is a nephew of Henry J., the son of Bernard C. Nieland. Henry J. owns his farm and has a radio. His immigration date is listed as 1892 and Bernard Ahrling's immigration date is 1864.

Agnes Ahrling, daughter of Bernard Henry Ahrling and Louise Werning, was born on 14 December 1876 in Carroll County, Iowa. .

The children of Henry Joseph Nieland and Agnes Ahrling were the following:

1) Joseph was born on 29 December 1900. He died on 29 December 1900
2) Anton was born on 18 March 1902. He died on 6 May 1918 at Breda, Carroll County, Iowa, at age 16. He was buried at St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery, Breda, Carroll County, Iowa.
3) Leo B was born 27 October 1904 at Iowa. He died 20 March 2002 at Carroll County, Carroll, Iowa at age 95. He was buried at St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery, Breda, Carroll County, Iowa.
4) Lawrence G. was born on 10 February 1907 in Iowa. He died on 26 October 2003 in Carroll, Carroll County, Iowa. He was buried at St. Bernard Cemetery, Breda, Carroll County, Iowa.
5) Cecilia, born 17 January 1910 at Iowa. She died 27 July 2000 at Breda, Carroll County, Iowa at age 90. She was buried at St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery, Breda, Carroll County, Iowa.
6) Mary A., born 21 July 1912 at Iowa. She died 22 June 2003 at Breda, Carroll, Iowa. She was buried at St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery, Breda, Carroll County, Iowa.

Agnes died on 25 November 1961 at Iowa, at age 84. She was buried at St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery, Breda, Carroll County, Iowa.
