Herman Franz Nieland was born on 22 February 1885 at Ramsdorf, Westphalia, Germany. Herman immigrated in 1910 to Breda, Carroll County, Iowa, United States. He is listed on the Ellis Island data as Franz Nieland, from Hieden, Germany. He arrived on October 9, 1910. He traveled from Bremen, Germany on the ship named the George Washington. The ship manifest says he paid for his own passage and he will travel to Breda, Iowa to live with his brother.

He appeared on the Federal census of 1920 at Carroll County, Iowa. Herman F. (34) is enumerated on a farm in Kniest Township, which he rents. His immigration date is 1910 and he lists his birthplace as Germany.

He appeared on the Federal census of 1930 at Carroll County, Iowa. Herman (45) is enumerated on a farm in Pleasant Valley Township. He was born in Germany. He is renting his farm and has a radio.

Herman and his brother Bernard visited relative in Germany several times. An article about their visit can be found in the History section of the web site (see Clippings).

Herman had one blind eye. This may have been the result of an injury. Herman died on 8 June 1958 at age 73. The cemetery records from the Carroll County Historical Society lists the death date as 8 June 1957. He was buried at St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery, Breda, Carroll County, Iowa.
