The son of John Henry Nieland and Hendrina Testrote (John Henry, Joannes Daniel, Joannes Bernardus, Johann Daniel, Berndt Nilandt, Earliest Nieland)

Johannas Henricus Josephus Nieland was born on 19 July 1809 at Eschlohn, Westphalia and baptized at St. Vitus Catholic Church in Südlohn. Eschlohn is near Südlohn, about 8 or 9 km from Ramsdorf. He married Elisabeth Osterholt on 8 October 1839 at St. Vitus Catholic Church, Südlohn, Westphalia, Prussia. "Henrich" is listed as 31 years old and born in Eschlohn; Elisabeth is 27 years old and born in Weseke. Witnesses are Gerhard Nieland and Gerhard Osterholt. He died on 23 December 1888 at Ramsdorf, Westphalia, Germany, at age 79.

He settled near Ramsdorf when his oldest son, Gerhard, was 25 years old [about 1865]. They wove linen there, in the "winter room" of their home. The house was on a farm of about 2 acres. The original house on the farm was rebuilt in about 1939 and was finished just before World War II. The barn was still there in the 1970's when David Nieland visited Germany. Ramsdorf is about an hour and a half walk from Holland. This adds weight to the family story that Henry Nieland (1852-1949) walked to Holland as the first step in his trip to the USA in 1869.

Elisabeth Osterholt, daughter of Johann Henrick Osterholdt and Anna Gesina Schemkes, was born on 5 April 1812 at Weseke, Prussia. She may also have been known as Maria Elisabeth.

The children of Johannas Henricus Nieland and Elisabeth Osterholt all born at Eschlöhn and baptized at Südlohn, Westphalia, Prussia, were the following:

1) John Gerhard, born and baptized 15 April 1840, godparents were Gerhard Nieland an Gesina Schemmillies Osterholt.
2) Maria Anna, born 16 January 1843 and baptized 17 January 1843, godparents were Heinrich Osterholt and Euphemia Alis Gehling.
3) Maria Gertrude, born and baptized 11 October 1845, godparents were Gerhard Nieland and Maria Gertrude Osterholt.
4) Maria Angela, born and baptized 17 April 1849, godparents were Gerhard Gehling and Anglea Osterholt.
5) John Henry, born 18 January 1852 and baptized 19 January 1852, godparents were John Gerhard Osterholt and Maria Christina Höfsoher Nieland.

Elisabeth Osterholt died on 11 October 1890 at Ramsdorf, Westphalia, Germany, at age 78.
