The son of John Henry Nieland and Anna Köster (John Henry, John Henry, John Henry, Joannes Daniel, Joannes Bernardus, Johann Daniel Nieland, Berndt Nilandt, Earliest Nieland)) Joseph Theodore Nieland was born on 21 March 1904 at Carroll County, Iowa. One of his godparents was his cousin, Theodore Boes. He married Susan B. Lappe on 25 August 1926. Joseph bought the farm from Henry Nieland so it was said they lived on the "home place" about 1930 near Breda, Carroll County, Iowa. He appeared on the 1930 Federal census of Carroll County, Iowa. Joseph (26) in enumerated on a farm next to his brother Herman in Wheatland Township. Also in the household are his wife Susan (24) and daughter Lorraine (1 3/12) and Joseph's brother Louis (28). They are renting their farm and have a radio. He later separated from Susan. They divorced about 1941. Joseph died on 15 August 1978 at Breda, Carroll County, Iowa, at age 74. He was buried at St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery, Breda, Carroll County, Iowa. The wife of Joseph Theodore Nieland (1904-1973) Susan B. Lappe, daughter of Joseph J. Lappe and Margaret Flies, was born on 25 March 1906. The children of Joseph Theodore Nieland and Susan B. Lappe were the following: 1) Lorraine M., born 28 June 1928 at Carroll, Carroll
County, Iowa. She died 21 June 2004 in Maquoketa, Jackson County,
Iowa. She was buried at Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery, Carroll,
Carroll County, Iowa. Susan died on 2 August 1995 at St. Anthony Nursing Home, Carroll, Carroll County, Iowa, at age 89. She is buried in Carroll, Carroll County, Iowa. Updated 20 September 2005
