Gerhard Boes (1837-1915)
Generation 8

The husband of Maria Anna Nieland (1843-1919)

Gerhard Boes, the son of Theodore Boes and Maria Anna Wiemeld (or Wiemelt), was born on 20 September 1837 at Ramsdorf, Westphalia, Prussia. The only record located so far is a baptism at St. Walburga Catholic Church for Gerhard Henrich Böes, 26 October 1837. This record lists the parents as Johann Henrich Böes from ?Raverts and Elisabeth Wiemelt, both living at Holthausen. Godparents for this child are Theodor Wiemelt and Anna Margaretha Böes. There is also a record of the marriage of Theodor Henrich Böes and Catharine Elisabeth Wiemelt on 11 August 1824 and records for baptisms of four of their children. More research is needed to clarify Gerhard's ancestry.

He immigrated in about 1867 according to family stories, perhaps traveling on the Bark Johanna from Bremen to New York, which arrived May 16, 1866. He served in the Prussian Army for several years, taking part in the wars between Prussia and Denmark in 1864 and the war with Austria and Bavaria in 1866. Gerhard Boes made wooden shoes and his children told their own children of the advantages of those shoes made from cottonwood.
