Catherine Grote, daughter of Herman Grote and Anna Rust, was born on 25 October 1889 at Carroll, Iowa. She was born on a farm southwest of Breda.

The children of William D. Nieland and Catherine Grote were the following:

1) Andrew Henry, born 9 November 1913 at Carroll, Iowa. He died on 30 May 2002 at Carroll, Carroll County, Iowa at age 88. He was buried at St. John Catholic Cemetery, Arcadia, Carroll County, Iowa.
2) Walter, born 18 April 1916 at Carroll, Carroll County, Iowa. He died on 28 November 1997 at Carroll, Carroll County, Iowa at age 81. He was buried at Mount Olivet Catholic Cemetery, Carroll, Carroll County, Iowa.

She married John Hackfort on 14 September 1915 at Holy Angels Catholic Church, Roselle, Carroll County, Iowa. She married Will Nieland on 18 February 1941. There were no children of William D. Nieland and Rose Hoffman.

Rose died on 10 January 1966 at Carroll, Carroll County, Iowa, at age 74. She is buried at Holy Angels Catholic Cemetery, Roselle, Carroll County, Iowa.
