Annabelle Schettler, age 89, of Carroll, died Thursday, February 10, 2005 at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska.

Mass of the Christian burial was celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, February 14, 2005 at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. Celebrant was Father Joe Dillinger.

Lectors were her grandsons, Andy Behrens, Jonathan Schettler and Chris Onken. Gift bearers were her granddaughters, Laurie Nielsen, Kate Furnal, Megan Andrew and Emily Schettler. Eucharistic ministers were Alan Schettler, JoAnn Wallace and Joan Schettler.

Honorary pallbearers were Mrs. Schettler's grand children.

Casket bearers were her grandsons, Rick Onken, Brent Schettler, Chad Schettler, Tyler Schettler, Ben Behrens, Ryan Wallace, Brad Behrens and Joe Schettler.

Burial was at St. Bernard Cemetery in Breda.

Friends called at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. A rosary was recited at 3 p.m. Sunday. There was a Christian wake service at 6:30 p.m. Sunday by the parish.

Mrs. Schettler was born September 6, 1915, at Maple River, Iowa, the daughter of John and Theresa (Dentlinger) Ocken. She spent her younger years in the Maple River community and attended St. Francis Schools. Prior to her marriage she performed domestic work for families in the area. She was married to Joseph B. Schettler on January 27, 1942, at St. Francis Church in Maple River. The couple farmed one quarter mile east of Breda until 1981 when they moved to Harlingen, Texas. Following her husband's death in 1987, Mrs. Schettler returned to Carroll to make her home. She was a member of St. Lawrence Parish and the Parish Ladies Guild. She enjoyed her grandchildren, watching sports on television, playing cards, gardening and growing flowers. She is survived by her children, Leona Onken and her husband Rich of Ralston, Nebraska, Alan Schettler and his wife Shirlee of Swisher, Larry Schettler and his special friend Sue Behrens of Audubon, Neil Schettler of New York City, Dean Schettler and his wife Joan of Breda, Marilyn Behrens and her husband, Dale of Roselle, and JoAnn Wallace and her husband, Randy of West Des Moines, 19 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren; sister Rosemary Krieg of Independence; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Vi Ocken of Mesa, Arizona, Norma Jean Ocken of Aurora, Colorado, Florentine Schettler of Carroll, Colette Grote of Carroll, sister Lucille Schettler, FSPA of LaCrosse, Wisconsin, Ray and Rita Schettler of Breda and Rita and Fred Lorenz of Omaha, Nebraska.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her Husband Joseph Schettler, in May 1987; sisters, Loretta Ocken, Marie Kramer, Angie Loew, and Frances Nelson; brothers, Lawrence, Cletus, Tony and Paul Ocken; and brothers Joseph Ocken, in infancy and twin brothers, John and Joseph Ocken in infancy.
