Funeral services for Anthony M. "Tony" Nieland
of St. Cloud, Minnesota, were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 16,
2003, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in St. Cloud.
Mr. Nieland, 86, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, at the
Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
The Rev. Timothy Wenzel officiated at the service,
and the burial was at Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little
Falls, Minnesota.
Military honors were provided by the St. Cloud Veterans
of Foreign Wars, Granite Post #428 and the Waite Park American Legion
Silver Star Post # 428.
Visitation was held form 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and
after 9 a.m. Thursday at the Daniel Funeral Home in St. Cloud. Parish
prayers were held at 6 p.m. followed by the St. Cloud Veterans of
Foreign Wars Granite Post #428 at 7 p.m. and the Waite Park American
Legion Silver Star Post # 428 at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral
home.
A son of Bernard and Catherine (Thelen) Nieland, he
was born Jan. 7, 1917, in St. Cloud.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving
in the European Theater as a German translator.
He married Alma M. Schaefer June 19, 1948 at St. Anthony's
Catholic Church in St. Cloud.
Mr. Nieland was self-employed as a floor covering
installer for many years, retiring in 1973. He was a member of the
St. Cloud Eagles Aerie #622, Waite Park American Legion Silver Star
Post # 428, St. Cloud Veterans of Foreign Wars Granite Post #428
and St. Anthony's Parish.
Survivors include two sons and their spouses, Ricky
and Bonnie Nieland of St. Cloud and Thomas and Barbara Nieland of
St. Joseph, five grandchildren; one great granddaughter; and a sister,
Christine Weber of Luxemburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife
Alma on Oct. 28, 2002; a son, Gary; six brothers, Julius, John,
Frank, Al, Joe, and Jerry; and a sister, Clara Roberts.
