Carol Rose Nieland  1946-1969

Final rites were held Dec. 29 for Sgt. Carol Nieland 23, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herman A. Nieland of rural Breda.

The Rev. John Doherty celebrated the requiem high mass at 10:30 a.m. in St. Bernard Church. Also in the sanctuary were the Revs. Harold Cooper, Vail, Marvin Boes, Sioux City, and Gerald L. Zeman, Breda.

Sgt. Nieland was buried in St. Bernard Cemetery with full military honors. The Fred F. and Norman J. Bruning Post No. 607, American Legion, of Breda formed an honor guard at the church and cemetery. Personnel from Offutt Air Force Base, Omaha, under command of T.Sgt. Ray B. Saunders, NCO-1c, served as pallbearers, firing detail, color guard and bugler. A-1c Mary L. Killon of Travis Air Force Base, Calif., was present as official escort for Sgt. Nieland's body. The American flag which covered the casket was folded and presented to her parents. Committal rites were conducted by Fr. Zeman.

Pallbearers were: S Sgts. Joseph V. Nicholas and Andrew C. Hent; Airman Robert F. Noltenmeier and Manuel L. Ramirez Jr.: A-1c James O. Johnes and Sgt. Gary H. Robinson.

In the firing detail were A-1c Vernon B. Hayes, Michael R. Bray, Rolland M. Cape, Vernon Jones and Paul Cutierrez; Sgts. Dennis E. Wacknov and Abele DePietro; and S. Sgt. Elmer E. Mieth. The color guar included S Sgt. Ronald J. Krasko, Ronald J. Fasanella and Edward M Sinovec, and Sgt. John J. Osuch. A-1c Steve Hines was bugler.

Sgt. Nieland died Dec. 22 at Clark Air Force Base, in the Philippines after suffering a gun shot wound in the head Dec. 18. She had been stationed in the Philippines since June 1969. She entered the WAF, Sept. 29, 1967, and took her basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.
