Delmar D. Bruning 1935-2010

Delmar Bruning, age 75, of Breda, Iowa, died Monday, Sept. 6, 2010, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Friday, September 10, 2010, at St. Bernard Church in Breda. The Celebrant will be Father Joe Dillinger and co-celebrant will be Father Leo Riesberg. Mass servers will be Miriah Masching and Matt Wessling. Lector will be Ken Schettler. Gift Bearers will be Ali Bruning, Addison Bruning and Holly Schettler. Eucharistic Ministers will be Madonna Boeckman, Bev Bruning and Donald Masching. 

Casket Bearers will be Delmar’s Grandsons: Jonathon Bruning, Eric Bruning, Jeffrey Bruning, Justin Bruning, Zachary Bruning, and John Herbolsheimer.  Vocalist for the funeral mass will be Jeffrey Bruning and Brandon Shestek. The Breda Catholic Order of Foresters will form an honor guard for the funeral mass. 

Burial will be at St. Bernard Cemetery in Breda.

Friends may call after 4 p.m. Thursday at St. Bernard Church in Breda. There will be a Christian wake service at 7 p.m. today by St. Bernard Parish. Visitation will resume at 8 a.m. Friday at the Sharp Funeral Home in Breda.

Delmar was born Aug. 2, 1935 at Breda, the son of Lawrence and Laura (Damm) Bruning.  He graduated from St. Bernard High School in 1953 and on Sept. 1, 1956 married Marita Nieland at St. Bernard’s Church in Breda.  He became employed at Pepsi-Cola in 1953 until August 1957 when he purchased Delmar’s Standard Service in Breda.  It later became D&L Standard Service with Loran Reising as his partner. 

In 1970, Delmar reverted to running business as Delmar’s Standard Service.  Delmar retired in 1997, sold his business to his son, who continues to run it today as Bruning Oil.  Delmar worked there part-time up until his death.  He was a member of St. Bernard Parish, St. Bernard’s Adult Choir, Breda Catholic Order of Foresters, where he served as an officer for the Northwest District and was a former member of the Breda Fire Department.  He also served on the Breda City Council for over 20 years.  Delmar loved his family.  He also enjoyed the Hawkeyes, the Cardinals, his cabin at the lake, playing cards, singing and socializing.

Survivors include his wife, Marita, of 54 years; his children: Dean Bruning and his wife Bev of Breda, Mary Jo Schettler and her husband Ken of Omaha, Neb., and Dan Bruning and his wife Cindy of Omaha, Neb., seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild; a sister, Dona Mae Neu and her husband Jerry of Santa Clara, Calif.; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Norman Nieland and his wife Gladys of Breda, Melvin Nieland and his wife Donita of Carroll, and Dr. Leo Nieland and his wife Jane of Denver, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his father and mother-in-law, Leo and Florence Nieland; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Nieland.
