Donald Omer Willis 1946-2007

SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa—Donald Willis, 61, of Spirit Lake, formerly of Marcus, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2007, following an auto accident near Spencer, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today, with a 3 p.m. rosary and a Scriptural prayer service at 7 p.m. at the church. Visitation will resume one hour prior to services Monday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Earnest-Rohde Funeral Home in Marcus.

Donald Omer Willis was born on Jan. 13, 1946, at Harper, Iowa, the son of Joseph Clark and Irene (Hammes) Willis. On Sept. 26, 1970, Don and Suzanne Delperdang were united in marriage at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus. Don farmed in rural Marcus for 21 years and worked in the construction business for more than 40 years. Don and Suzanne most recently made their home in Spirit Lake.

Survivors include his wife, Suzanne of Spirit Lake; a daughter, Cassie Willis and her husband, Jeff Fulmer of Marion, Iowa; two sons, Ted Willis and his wife, Julie of Fort Collins, Colo., and Joe Willis of Sioux City; four grandchildren, Brennan and Willis Fulmer of Marion, and Ben and Grace Willis of Fort Collins; four brothers, Kenny (Jan Willis of Eldridge, Iowa, Denny (Barb) Willis of South Sioux City, Bob (Joy) Willis of Bettendorf, Iowa, and Tom (Barb) Willis of Davenport, Iowa; and a sister, Lorene (Donnie) Altenhofen of Eldridge, Iowa.

Don was preceded in death by his parents.

Don graduated from St. Elizabeth’s High School in Harper, Iowa and Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa and Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa. Don served in the US Army and was a Vietnam veteran.

Don was an active member of St. Mary’s Church in Spirit Lake. He’s been a member of the Knights of Columbus since age 18. Don was a member of the Marcus Jaycees and the Marcus city council. He took an interest in hunting, fishing, boating, card playing and piloting aircraft.
