Former Director of Nursing Is Called to Eternal Reward
With the death of Sister M. Florina Nieland, Wednesday, Mar. 13, St. Francis and Wisconsin have lost another of their pioneer nurse educators. Sister died after a lingering illness of several months at St. Francis Hospital, La Crosse, at the age of 72.
Sister Florina was born in Breda, Iowa, and entered the Order of Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, St. Rose Convent, La Crosse, in 1901. She graduated from St. Francis School of Nursing, La Cross, in 1909 and worked as a bedside nurse at St. Francis until 1914.
Serves As Director
Thirty-two years of Sister’s life were spent as director of a school of nursing. From 1914 to 1920 she served as director of St. Anthony’s School of Nursing, Carroll, Iowa. The years between 1921 and 1930 were spent at St. Mary’s School of Nursing, Sparta, Wis. And from 1930 until 1948, when she retired from the professional field, she served as director of her alma mater, St. Francis School of Nursing, La Crosse.
Works for Nursing
Nurse educators in Wisconsin will remember Sister Florina as one who stood firm as a pillar for the advancement of nursing education. In the dark days for schools of nursing throughout the country, and in Wisconsin, her untiring efforts were given to keep nursing standards on the highest level. As a member of the Wisconsin State Board of Nursing for many years she was in a position to voice her opinion where it would be counted.
Alumnae Figure
During her 18 years as director of the St. Francis many nursing students sought her counsel and guidance. Alumnae designate her as “the Sister who could always remember our names and knew where we were living, what we were doing, and how many children we had.” Sister was ever ready to call attention to the necessity of prayer and sacrifice in the life of a good nurse.
Sister Florina was able to spend two notable events in her life with former students. There were the first homecoming celebration held in 1947 and the fiftieth anniversary of her religious profession in 1954. On both occasions alumnae were generous with their material gifts and sincere best wishes.
Last Rites Take Place
Funeral services were held at St. Rose Convent, Friday, March 15. Pall bearers were Sister M. Victoria, her assistant director for many years; Sister M. Cordula, a co-worker in religion, Sister M. Francita, Sister Mary Aquin, Sister Grace Clare and Sister M. De Lourdes, for of her former students. Burial was in the Catholic cemetery, La Crosse.
Sister Florina is survived by four sisters, one of whom, Sister Sigmunda, is a religious at St. Rose Convent, and six brothers. Two of her nieces, Sister M. Danielle [Sister Pauline Wittry] and Sister M. Anthusa [Cecilia Nieland] and two grand nieces, Sister Rosina [Anita Poeppe] and Sister Justene [Ruth Ann Nieland] are also members of St. Rose Convent.
