Lawrence Nieland, age 96, of Breda, died Sunday, October
26, 2003, at the Centers for Long Term Care in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian burial will be celebrated at
10:30 a., Thursday, October 30, 2003, at St. Bernard Church in Breda.
The Celebrant will be Father James Smith.
Lectors will be Ruth Tigges, Gene Nieland and Ethel
Unger. Gift bearers will be Julie Tigges-Bornong, Lori Snyder, Jan
Stork, and Mary Jo Wellenstein. Mass servers will be Samantha Snyder,
Michelle Nieland, and Christopher Nieland. Eucharistic minister
will be Sister Ione Nieland.
Casket bearers will be Kevin Nieland, Dan Nieland,
Steve Nieland, Dr. Michael Tigges, Dr. Russell Tigges, Doug Tigges
and Mark Unger.
Burial will be at St. Bernard Cemetery in Breda.
Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Breda
after 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. A rosary will be recited at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
There will be a Christian wake service at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday by
the parish.
Mr. Nieland was born on February 10, 1907, at Breda,
the son of Henry Joseph and Agnes (Ahrling) Nieland. He attended
county schools and St. Bernard's School in Breda. He was married
to Helen Sander on January 17, 1933, at St. Francis Church in Maple
River. The couple farmed the family farm southeast of Breda their
entire married life. Mr. Nieland entered the nursing home four years
age. He was a member of St. Bernard Parish at Breda. He enjoyed
farming, gardening, playing cards, playing bingo and fishing.
He
is survived by his wife, Helen, of Breda; children: Gene Nieland
and his wife, Becky, of Breda, Ruth Tigges and her husband, Leon,
of Carroll, Louis [sic] Cousseau and her husband, Peter, of New
York City, Sister Ione Nieland, FSPA of Ames, Ethel Unger and her
husband, Tom, of Silverton, Oregon, and Duane Nieland of Carroll;
18 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; brother-in-law, Lawrence
Huegerich of Breda; and sister-in-law, Frances Sander of Carroll.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son,
Larry Nieland; daughter-in-law, Connie Nieland; brothers: Anton
and Leo Nieland, and a brother, Joseph, in infancy; and sisters,
Cecilia Huegerich and Mary Nieland.
