Leonard G. Steinkamp  1921-1981

Mass of the Christian Burial for Leonard G. Steinkamp, 60, of rural Breda was celebrated at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, February 26, at St. Bernard church with the Rev. Robert McClintock officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Mr. Steinkamp, a farmer, died at 5:10 a.m. Tuesday, February 24, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll. He had been in failing health for about a year.

A scriptural prayer service was conducted at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Sharp Funeral Home in Breda with the Kuemper High School varsity and sophomore boys' basketball teams participating. Pallbearers were Harold Uhlenkamp, Leo Snyder, Ray Schettler, Wilmer Schelle, Ed Snyder and Dean Tiefenthaler. The Rev. J. Charles Yetmar was lector; Russell Nieland, Jon Heisterkamp and Bob Neumayer mass-servers, and two grandchildren: Scott Steinkamp and Nikki Bierl gift bearers.

Mr. Steinkamp is survived by his wife Lynette; nine children: Jim and Dick, Breda; Mrs. Leon (Alyce) Bierl, Arcadia; Tom, Carroll; LeRoy, Mike, Mrs. Larry (Mary) Dettbarn, Dale and Dean, Breda; eight grandchildren; a brother Anton Steinkamp, Arcadia; four sisters: Mrs. Elizabeth Thobe, Carroll; Mrs. Theresa Kramer, Lidderdale; Mrs. Mary Kohorst, Arcadia, and Mrs. Hilbert (Agnes) Eischeid, Manning, and his mother-in-law Mrs. Catherine Schultes, Carroll.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Jerome in infancy and three brothers.

Mr. Steinkamp was born January 7, 1921, at Breda, a son of Ferdinand and Mary Nieland Steinkamp. He spent his entire life in the area with the exception of U.S. Army service from Sept. 8, 1942 to Oct. 7, 1945, during World War II.

On July 31, 1945 he was married to Lynette Schultes at St. Mary's church, Willey, by the late Rev. H.J. Drees.

After their marriage they farmed a mile north of Breda, their present home. He was a member of St. Bernard church and Fred A. and Norman J. Bruning American Legion Post.
