Mass of the Christian burial for Marcella M. Gross of Carroll will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Mount Carmel.

Mrs. Gross, 85, formerly of Mount Carmel, died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.

The Rev. Thomas Munn will preside at the Mass. Lectors will be Mrs. Gross' daughter, Sister Suzanne Gross, and brother, Raymond Schettler. Petitions will be read by Sister Colleen Ann Nagle. Gift bearers will be Sister Lucile Schettler, Rita Lorenz, Leanne Harvey, Sister Mary Ann Schmitz and Sister Mary Richards. Mass servers will be Brian Lenz, Chris Tigges, and Nick Siepker. Eucharistic ministers will be Sister Marcia Ternes, Sister Mary Roberta Connors and Art Reiff.

Casket bearers will be Roger Kanne, Lynn Schapman, Jon Gross, Norman Schettler, Ken Schettler and Elmer Schettler.

Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

A daughter of Bernard and Emma (Hoebing) Schettler, she was born June 17, 1914, at Breda and spent her younger years there, graduating from St. Bernard High School in 1931.

She and Raymond Gross were married Aug. 17, 1937, at St. Bernard Church in Breda. The grosses lived on the family farm eight miles north of Carroll.

After her husband died in 1971, Mrs. Gross stayed on the farm until moving into Swan House in Carroll in January 1999.

She was a member of Our Lay of Mount Carmel Parish and its Alter Society, the Catholic Daughters of America and the Breda American Legion Auxiliary, of which she was the last surviving Golden Star Mother. Mrs. Gross enjoyed gardening, growing roses and quilting. She was also an avid traveler, having gone to 49 states, Germany and the Holy Land.

Survivors include a daughter, Sister Suzanne Gross, Franciscan Sister of the Eucharist, Meriden, Conn.; a daughter-in-law, Leanne Harvey, and her husband Richard, of Meriden; a brother, Ray Schettler, and his wife, Rita, of Breda; four sisters: Colette Grote of Carroll, Sister Karen Schettler, FSPA of La Crosse, Wis., Sister Lucile Schettler, FSPA, of La Crosse and Rita Lorenz and her husband, Fred, of Omaha, Neb.; seven sisters-in-law; Clara Schettler of Carroll, Florentine Schettler of Carroll, Annabelle Schettler of Carroll, Sister Mynette Gross FSPA, of La Crosse, Florence Schapman of Carroll, Rita Meyer of Carroll and Zelda Gross of Mount Carmel; and a brother-in-law, Herbert Pudenz, of Mount Carmel.

Mrs. Gross was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Raymond; a son, 2nd Lt. Wayne W. Gross, kidded in Vietnam, in 1968; five brothers; Eugene, Leonard, Cyril, Joseph and Vincent Schettler; three sister, Cecelia, Leona and Georgia Schettler; and the following brothers- and sisters-in-law: Aloys and Louise Kanne, Albert Schapman, Norbert Gross, Arnold Meyer, Paul Gross, Mae Pudenz, Marian Schettler and Herman Grote
