The Breda News, September 28, 2005 Mathilda Thelen, age 91, of Breda, Iowa, died Friday, September 23, 2005, at the Carroll Manor Nursing Home in Carroll. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, September 27, 2005, at St. Bernard Church in Breda. The Celebrant will be Father James McAlpin. Lectors will be Kristy Liechti and Lori Ehlers. Gift Bearers will be Earl and Alice Boes. Eucharistic Minister will be Kristy Liechti. Mass Servers will be Brain and Matt Koster. The Breda American Legion Auxiliary will form an honor guard at the church for the funeral mass. Honorary Pallbearers will be Vic Wendl, Marie Wendl, Rose Ludwig, Anna Lappe, Ernestine Lappe, Florence Bruening, Betty Masching, Wanda Lehrkamp, Elsie Hausman, Esther Heim, Agatha Reiman, and Babe Schweers. Casket Bearers will be Scott Thelen, Jon Thelen, Bryce Brincks, Chance Thelen, Gavin Gleason, and Steven Thelen. Burial will be at St. Bernard Cemetery in Breda. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Breda after 2:30 P.M. Monday. A rosary will be recited at 3 P.M. Monday by St. Bernard Ladies Guild and the Legion of Mary. There will be a Christian wake service at 7:30 P.M. Monday by St. Bernard Parish. Mrs. Thelen was born in February 24, 1914, at Breda, Iowa, the daughter of Theodore and Anna (Schulte) Boes. She spent most of her lifetime in the Breda community and attended St. Bernard School. On September 3, 1935, she was married to Fred H. Thelen in Breda with Father Edgar Schleyer officiating. The couple farmed northeast of Breda. Mrs. Thelen was a homemaker and was employed by St. Bernard School Hot Lunch Program for 10 years. She was a member of St. Lawrence Parish in Carroll, St. Bernard Parish in Breda, St. Bernard Ladies Guild, Breda American Legion Auxiliary, and Legion of Mary. Mrs. Thelen enjoyed her family, visiting with friends, going to casinos, playing cards, fishing, crocheting, reading, shopping, cooking, and baking. She is survived by her children, Howard Thelen and his wife Charlene of Omaha, Nebr., Ronald Thelen and his wife Mary of Fredericksburg, Virginia, Dale Thelen and his wife Vernell of Overland Park, Kansas, Mark Thelen of Breda, Mary Kay Brincks and her husband Vernon "Lefty" of Carroll, Gary Thelen and his wife Linda of Circle Pine, Minn., Jean Gleason of Louisville, Kentucky, Diane Mandel and her husband Jerry of San Jose, Calif., and Deborah Thelen of Moline, Illinois; 13 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; brother Earl Boes and his wife Alice of Breda; sister, Rose Ludwig of Carroll; and sisters-in-law, Hendrina Boes of Breda, Wilma Boes of Breda, and Margaret Boes of Carroll. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Fred Thelen, in 1998, brothers, Tony, Clemens, Clarence, Raymond, Albert, and Edmund Boes; and sister, Philomena Thelen.
