Norbert George Nieland 1911- 2005

Norbert G. Nieland, 94, of Carroll, died August 25, 2005 at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll.

Mass of the Christian burial was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 27, 2005 at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Breda. Officiating at the Mass was Father James McAlpin.

Gift bearers were Dolora Brincks and Dorothy Geister. Lector was Randy Nieland. Eucharistic minister was Randy Nieland.

Burial was at St. Bernard's Cemetery in Breda.

Friends and relatives called at the Twit Funeral Home in Carroll after 2:30 p.m. Friday. A rosary was held at 3 p.m. Friday and a vigil service was held at 6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

A son of Frank and Mary (Naberhaus) Nieland, he was born on February 7, 1911 at Breda. He attended St. Bernard's School in Breda.

On February 4, 1941, he married Evelyn E. Espen at St. John's Church in Arcadia. Father Mathias Stork officiated the ceremony.

Norbert was a lifetime farmer in the Carroll and Breda Area. He was a member of St. Bernard's Church. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, making arts and crafts, and working with puzzles. He had a great sense of humor and enjoyed teasing his friends.

He is survived by a brother Arnold Nieland and his wife, Germaine of Auburn; and a sister, Genevieve Lammers of West Union; and a sister-in-law, Marie Nieland of Storm Lake and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Evelyn Nieland in 1998; brother Richard Nieland; and sisters; Sister M. Anthusa, Julia Poeppe, Elinor Nees, Marie Reineke and one [sister] in infancy.
