Final Rites Held Here Tuesday For Fr. Norbert
Boes
The Rev. Norbert J. Boes, 57, pastor of St. Mary's
Catholic Church at Alton; and former pastor of St. Joseph Catholic
Church at Salix, died Friday, Sept. 24, at St. Anthony Regional
Hospital in Carroll, after a long illness.
Father Boes had been a pastor at St. Joseph for 14
years when he was assigned to St. Mary in the summer of 1968. He
had been a pastor for more than 30 years, also having served successfully
at Dedham, the Cathedral of the Epiphany and Blessed Sacrament Catholic
Church in Sioux City and Pomeroy.
He was honored in 1964 at Salix for 25 years service
as a priest. He had served actively at St. Mary in Alton until he
became ill in August of this year.
Fr. Boes, the son of John and Anna K. Geier Boes,
was born Jan. 27, 1914, at Wall Lake. He began his education in
rural schools near Breda and graduated from St. Bernard's High School
at Breda in 1931. He attended Trinity College in Sioux City, graduating
in 1935, and continued his studies in theology at Kenrick Seminary
in St. Louis, Mo. He was ordained to the priesthood May 25, 1939,
at the Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City by the late Bishop
Edmond Heelan. He celebrated his first solemn High Mass at St. Bernard
Catholic Church at Breda.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday at St.
Mary at Alton. The Most Rev. Frank H. Greteman, Bishop of Sioux
City Diocese was celebrant of the concelebrated mass.
The body arrived at St. Bernard at Breda after 5 p.m.
Monday.
Funeral services at St. Bernard Church were at 10:30
a.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Clair Boes was the celebrant of a concelebrated
mass. Burial was in the parish cemetery at Breda. The Twit Funeral
Home of Carroll was in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include four brothers, William and Julius
both of Breda, and Cletus and Romain, both of Carroll; and a sister,
Mrs. Henry (Eleanora) Steinkamp of Carroll.
He was preceded in death by a brother Leonard and
two brothers in infancy.
