Patrick Hannasch, 20, hit by a pickup truck, killed

Possible charges against Dwight Warren Pierce, 22, of Coon Rapids are being studied by the Carroll County sheriff 's office following a pickup-pedestrian accident Saturday tat claimed the life of Patrick H. Hannasch, 20, of 127 S. Court St., Carroll.

Sheriff John G. Longnecker said the accident investigation is continuing" and it will probably be later in the week before a decision on filing charges is reached.

Hannasch was pronounced dead on arrival at St. Anthony Regional Hospital here after being injured about 2:30 a.m. by a pickup truck driven by Pierce, the sheriff said.

Hannasch was walking along Highway 30 about l'/4 miles east of Carroll when the accident occurred.

The death was Carroll County's first traffic fatality of 1978.

Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Holy Spirit Church in Carroll with the Rev. Merlin Schrad officiating.

Pallbearers were Wayne Claggett, Mark Williams, Lee Buelt, Brian Kanne, Dean Kanne and Brandon Gute. Burial was in Mt. Olivet Cemetery under the direction of the Twit Funeral Home.

Hannasch, son of Jerome and Jean Wittry Hannasch, was born Jan. 16, 1958 at Carroll. He was a 1976 graduate of Kuemper High School, attended Iowa Central Community College in Ft. Dodge and was a student at the Texas A and I University at Kingsviile, Texas. He was a former summer employee 'of the Highway Surfacers of New Hampton, Iowa.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus of Carroll, Delta Tau Delta fraternity at Kingsviile, Texas, a former 4-H area councilman and officer, a member of the championship judging team for livestock and a representative at the International Livestock Stock Exposition at Louisville, Ky. He was a lifetime Carroll resident.

Surviving are his parents and the following brothers and sisters, Mike of Ft. Dodge, Jane of Cedar Falls, Tom of Ames; Mark, Dick, Mary, Roch and Jim at home; two half-brothers, Gerald Kraus of Des Moines and LeRoy Kraus of Omaha, Neb. Also surviving are his grandmothers, Mrs. John Hannasch of Carroll and Mrs. Anna Wittry of Breda.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Teresa.
