Robert L. Gibbs, 77, of Ames, died Thursday, April 21, 2011, at Mary Greeley Medical Center. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, April 25, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 26, at Stevens Memorial Chapel with Ordained Minister Steve Burgason officiating. Burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Robert Gibbs was born May 8, 1933, in Nevada, to Albert M. and Genevieve Gibbs. He married Velma Lewis on June 1, 1956. She passed away in 1986. He married Marilyn Smith on Aug. 27, 1988. He was a member of the American Legion Post 37.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and later in the Air Force, being discharged in 1957. He was a ham radio operator, operator KCOIHG and loved to bowl. He was a member of the Ames Police Department for several years and sold insurance for MFA and Blue Cross. He also owned several gas stations in Ames. He retired from Rochester Armored Car.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Gibbs, of Ames; four children, David Gibbs, of Ames, Linda Heintz, of Nevada, Melodee (Kenny) Graham, of Ames, and Kim Carlson, of Prior Lake, Minn.; grandchildren, Michael (Betsy) Katschke, Brandee Thompson, Brandon Graham, Blake Graham, and Lacey Percy; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Patricia Martens and Catherine Johnson, both of Roland; and two brothers, Richard Gibbs, of Laguna Woods, Calif., and Donald (Pat) Gibbs, of Urbandale.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Velma; a brother, Michael; and a son-in-law, Michael Katschke.
