Urban J. Schulte 1919-2001

Urban Schulte, age 82, of Breda, died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 13, 2001, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Mt. Carmel. Officiating at the service was Father James Smith.

Internment was at St. Bernard Cemetery in Breda.

The lectors at the service were Stephanie Schulte and Lisa Ahrens. Altar servers were Nick and Ryan Schulte.

Honorary pallbearers were Jeff Pudenz, Billy Stark, Dale Snyder, Floyd Koster, Bernie Walusz, Delar Bruning, Tony Heisterkamp and Greg Imwehe.

Casket bearers were Chad Schulte, Scott Schulte, Brent Schulte, Kyle Schulte, Brooke Schulte, Brad Ahrens, Renee Ahrens, and John Schulte.

Friends called at the Sharp Funeral Home in Breda after 2:30 p.m. on Thursday. A rosary was recited at 3 p.m. Thursday. There was a Christian wake service at 6:30 p.m. Thursday by the parish.

A Memorial Mass for Mr. Schulte was held at 8:15 a.m., Monday, April 16, 2001 at Christ the King School Gym in Breda.

Urban Schulte was born on February 27, 1919 at Wall Lake, Iowa, the son of Leo and Catherine (Boes) Schulte. He spent his lifetime in the Breda community and attended St. Bernard Schools. Following his schooling he farmed with his brother, Edgar, northwest of Breda. He entered the U.S. Army in July 1942 and served during World War II. He saw action in New Guinea, Bismarck Archipelago, Philippines, Luzon and the occupation force in Japan. He was honorably discharged in November 1945. On April 17, 1947, he was married to Joan Poeppe at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Mt. Carmel. Following their marriage the couple farmed and owned and operated Schulte and Sons Dairy for better than twenty years. He was manager of the Breda fertilizer Co for on year in 1970. He was a member of St. Bernard Parish and served as a Eucharistic Minister, Breda American Legion, Catholic Order of foresters, and was a charter member of the Secular Franciscan Fraternity of St. Bernard’s. He was a 4-H leader for twenty years. He enjoyed wood working, gardening, saw sharpening, fishing and coffee shop visits with his friends.

Mr. Schulte is survived by his wife, Joan, of Breda; children: MaryLou Ahrens, and her husband, Don, of Osage, Larry Schulte and his wife, Patti, of Carmel, Indiana, Ted Schulte, and his wife Rose, of Cummings, Georgia, Dick Schulte and his wife, Linda, of Marina, California, Mark Schulte, and his wife, Betty, of Weidmann, Michigan, Denis Schulte, and his wife, Michelle, of De Witt, Iowa, and Colette Pluke, and her husband, David, Of Minneapolis, Minnesota, 19 grandchildren; 4 step grandchildren; a sister, Hilaria Pick of Breda, and brothers, Ronald Schulte of Carroll and Herb Schulte and his wife, Marlys, of Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandchild, Summer Schulte; and two brothers, Edgar and Donald Schulte.
