Remembering Anna Köster (Nieland) (1863-1933)

— Letter From Joan Hannasch to Kay Davis in December 2001

Grandma [Anna Köster] Nieland died when I was very young. I remember her as a very sober, stern person. I was impressed to be "seen and not heard" in her presence. She always wore long black dresses, and had her hair pulled back in a bun. I don't remember her as ever smiling or seeming to be happy about anything.

All I remember about her death was someone saying she was "in a coma". It was said she came to take care of the children when the first wife died, and they "didn't want her to leave". I'm sorry I didn't know her better.
