Okarche, Oklahoma, February 1970
THE DEATH OF ANTON Smith removes another of the original charter
members of the Okarche Catholic Order of Foresters, initiated
here in 1917. Tony was also among those who with their families
came here in the so-called "Emigrant Cars" furnished
by railroads in those early days.
Since cross-country moving as we know it today, was impossible
then, the railroads would rent a box car to anyone wishing to
move into the new territory, in which they could load a cow,
the family furniture and what farming equipment needed, and
the family would live on the car as it slowly moved cross-country
to the new land.
In so doing, the railroads helped populate the territories,
thus insuring future business of hauling wheat and farm produce.
Upon arrival, the contents of the car would be unloaded a set
distance from the track and the new settler or "Emigrant",
was on his own.
